How payment method storage works

A commitment authorizes a charge that may happen weeks later, only if the commitment fails. For that to work, a usable payment method has to be on file in advance.

• Saving the method is part of the authorization you give at checkout — it is not a payment.
• The method becomes your default and can be reused for future commitments unless you change it.

• Payment-provider identifiers and limited display details such as card brand, last four digits, and expiry date.
• Commitery does not receive or store full card numbers or CVC values — those stay with the payment provider.
• This is enough to show you which card is on file and to request a later charge, without Commitery handling raw card data.

The saved method is intended to be reusable. After a user saves a card once, later commitment checkouts can show the saved payment method instead of asking the user to type card details again.

• The user still has to accept the commitment terms and authorize the conditional charge for each new commitment.
• Reusing a saved card is convenience, not blanket permission to charge unrelated amounts.
• If the payment provider or bank requires fresh authentication, the user may still need to complete an additional verification step.

When a failed commitment finally becomes chargeable, the charge is made off-session — you are not present to confirm it. Banks sometimes require extra verification for these.

• The provider may require additional authentication before an off-session charge can succeed.
• If a charge cannot be completed, the payment state is handled as described in Charges and invoices.

You can update your saved payment method from checkout or profile settings. Because active commitments carry a conditional charge authorization, they still need a usable payment method on file until they resolve.

• Replacing the card affects future charge attempts, but it does not erase the commitments already created.
• If a saved method is removed or becomes unusable while active commitments exist, Commitery may require a new method before more commitments can be created.
